when making plans for cyra's big number two bash.. i looked everywhere for a tutorial on how to make your own birthday hat.. could not find one so i decided i'd share my own.. enjoy!
for this project you'll need:
embroidery floss, needle, small piece of felt, fabric for outside and inside of hat, fusible fleece, ribbon or elastic for the ties, pom-poms (optional for top)
1. first you'll need to download hat-template.
2. next cut out all your pieces, notice that the template requires you to cut on the fold on one edge.. cut out your fusible fleece, inside and outside of hat, and a bias strip about 2 inches wide for the base for the hat
3. iron the fleece to one side and use fabric glue to lightly to glue the other side
4. fold and iron the bias strip then stitch along the curved edge
5. next you'll want to wrap the fabric into a shape of you're hat and blanket stitch along the back side from the bottom up
6. once you get to the top of your hat use the same thread and needle to attach pom poms, ribbons.. or anything you like..
7. next use the numbers in the template to cut out felt number and then glue it to the front of the hat, at this point you could laso add any trim.. I used ric-rac
8. for the last step, attach a ribbon or a piece of elastic to each side of the base of the hat.. so that your little one can easily run around and party like a rock-star without their hat falling off..

Hi Jacquie.. it is a thick interfacing.. that you iron onto other fabric to add stiffness.. you can purchase it at almost all fabric shops..
